How To Achieve The “No Makeup” Makeup Look

August 3, 2020 By

The “no makeup” makeup look may be beauty’s biggest contradiction — but that shouldn’t stop you from mastering this “look natural” technique. It can often feel like a lot of products (and effort) are necessary to look like you’re not wearing any makeup at all. But, once you streamline your strategy, you’ll be able to put your best face forward day after day without hassle.

Read on to learn how to perfect natural-looking makeup — and for a complete guide to achieving this look.

What Is The “No Makeup” Look?

Whether you’ve seen it on runways and magazine pages or on models and celebrities who look effortlessly gorgeous 24/7, there’s no denying the no makeup look is popular. In fact, it’s become as much a staple as other classic makeup go-tos, such as the smokey eye or the bright red lip.

Mastering this look is all about the skin — perfecting your base, achieving a healthy glow and natural flush, and also using premium skincare.

The goal of “no-makeup” makeup is to create a flawless natural look, letting your skin shine through. You’ll show off clear and smooth skin, well-groomed brows, and just a touch of color on your cheeks and lips, letting your natural beauty take center stage.1

This makeup style is great for everyday, and it’s the ideal base for more intricate looks. You can simply layer on more color or makeup products to accentuate your favorite features or to take your face from day to night.

How To Achieve The “No Makeup” Makeup Look: The Complete Tutorial

Follow these steps whenever you want to show off a natural-looking, polished complexion. Remember, it’s all about letting your natural skin shine through, so it’s best to start with your base.

Step 1: Prep Skin Properly

Since the natural look isn’t about piling on full-coverage foundation, it’s worth investing time and energy in preparing your skin well. Regardless of your skin tone or skin type, the goal is healthy, glowing skin.

Always start  with skincare. In addition to your regular cleansing and moisturizing routine, try applying a hydrating mask or spray to plump up skin with a boost of moisture. To reveal smooth and clear skin, use a gentle exfoliant 2-3 times a week. And to protect your skin (and add an extra priming layer), remember to apply a light, matte sunscreen product.2

You could also apply a lightweight primer or tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone and texture.3

The more you focus on good skin prep and letting your skin “breathe,” the more you may find yourself skipping foundation all together!

Step 2: Use A Lightweight Concealer For Blemishes

Apply a small amount of lightweight concealer only where you need it to maintain that natural look.  Use a small brush to dot concealer on blemish marks and pigmentation, but opt to dab concealer on dark circles with a finger for a more natural finish.4

How to choose the best concealer: For the under-eyes, choose a creamy or radiant finish to lighten and brighten the area. For blemishes or other discoloration, opt for a matte finish that’s a true match with your skin tone so that it can blend in seamlessly.5

Step 3: Use Cream-Based Eyeshadow And Blush

One way to perfect the “no makeup” look is to use cream blush and eyeshadow. Applying a small amount with a light hand can add just the right amount of color for a fresh, vibrant look.. Even better, select a neutral palette to really play up your natural skin tone. Earthy, nude shades can really help bring out your glow.6

Normal skin types shouldn’t have a problem with cream products, but if you have naturally oily skin, you may feel creamy finishes aren’t for you. You can still experiment with cream products, but try sheer and matte finishes instead of shimmery ones to offset excess shine.

Step 4: Groom Your Brows And Play Up Your Lashes

Natural-looking brows are key in this look. Simply brush and shape them with a spoolie and set with a brow gel, or lightly define with a pencil if you have any sparse areas.7

Try to also aim for natural-looking lashes. Skip the  falsies. Light definition and lift is all you need to open up your eyes and make you look more rested or awake. Curl gently, and swipe on a coat or two of black or brown mascara to accentuate your eyes. Once again, use a light hand to apply, and brush out your lashes with a spoolie or lash comb to remove any excess mascara. Always avoid clumps, natural look or otherwise.8

Step 5:  Set Your Makeup With A Hydrating Mist

The true secret to dewy, youthful-looking skin? Amping up the moisture. Liberally spray a hydrating mist over your face to set your makeup and make it look even more diffused and natural. You can also bring the mist on the go and spray throughout the day to instantly look more refreshed.9

Step 6: Swipe On A Lip Product

You have a few options when it comes to your lips. If you used an all-in-one neutral creamy product for your eyes and cheeks, you can also dab some on your lips. You can also apply a nude lip stain for a subtle, longwearing color. Or simply swipe on some lip balm for a hydrated pout.10

Find Your “No-Makeup” Makeup Sweet Spot

Ultimately, the “no makeup” look depends on just how “natural” you’re willing to go. Some people are comfortable with the bare minimum of just a tinted moisturizer and a nude lip…

While others feel more comfortable with extra touches like neutral-shade eyeliners and a bit of bronzer to complete their “no-makeup” look.

Approach this look with a “less-is-more” attitude. Don’t be afraid to simplify your daily list of products and use “all-in-ones” for more ease.

Your best bet? Invest in your skincare. The healthier and happier your skin, the easier it will be to pull off the natural look. If you’re comfortable in your skin, you’re sure to look fantastic — with or without makeup.
